Angkor Optionals

Bird Sanctuary of Prek Toal

Programme: One or two-day tour

We journey through floating villages and flooded forest on a traditional wooden boat to Prek Toal biosphere, the premier bird-viewing destination in South-East Asia and home to rare, large water birds such as stork, ibis, crane and pelican. After a picnic lunch aboard the boat, we return to Siem Reap. For those with a serious interest in birds, this is a must and can be arranged as a two-day trip with an overnight in a floating village, ensuring premium bird-viewing in the late afternoon and early morning. This trip is best in the dry season, as birds flock here from all over the region.

Phnom Kulen

We journey through jungle to this sacred mountain to explore the huge reclining Buddha, riverbed carvings, early temples and a beautiful waterfall. We enjoy a picnic lunch at the waterfall and offer an optional visit to the the massive stone animal carvings at Sra Damrei, although this is only for the very adventurous and includes a bumpy motorbike ride and long walk. A great adventure!

Beng Mealea

We travel to this remote and enchanting temple, the size of Angkor Wat, but consumed by jungle. We enjoy a picnic lunch inside the temple and a guided tour through the labyrinthine structure.

Anlong Veng

Programme: One day tour

We journey to this former stronghold of the Khmer Rouge, visiting the house of military leader Ta Mok, as well as the site of Pol Pot’s cremation near the Thai border. We do not recommend this trip in the wet season.

Banteay Chhmar

We journey to this remote Angkorian temple in north-west Cambodia to explore the incredible carvings around this massive complex. We also visit the smaller temple of Banteay Top. This can be done as a long day trip in the dry season or an overnight trip in the wet season, staying in the provincial capital of Svay Sisophon. It can also be combined with a visit to the bird sanctuary of Ang Trapeng Thmor near Phnom Srok, home to the rare Sarus Crane seen on the bas reliefs at Angkor. Helicopter to Remote Temples

For the remote temples of Preah Vihear, Koh Ker and Preah Khan, we offer the option of flying by helicopter to these inaccessible locations. This is a very memorable experience. For the ultimate adventure, we also offer a 4WD temple safari, overnighting in local villages and tackling terrible roads. It’s tough but it’s memorable - see the Temple Safari tour later in this section for more details. There are also two new roads being constructed to Preah Vihear temple so we will be able to offer this mountain temple as a two-day option in future.
